The Rev. Dr. Robert A. Evans, Executive Director

Bob is the Executive Director of Plowshares Institute.  He studied at the Universities of Yale, Edinburgh, Berlin, and Basel, and received his doctorate from Union Seminary and Columbia University in New York.  He was a Senior Fellow in the Centre for Conflict Resolution at the University of Cape Town, South Africa; Senior Trainer for Empowering for Reconciliation and Peace, Indonesia; and Special Researcher for the Academy of Social Sciences, Nanjing, China. He has taught on the faculty of universities and seminaries in Uganda, Fiji, New York, Chicago and Hartford and has served as a Presbyterian pastor in congregations in Oklahoma, Alabama, Illinois and Connecticut. As Executive Director of Plowshares Institute, he is the author of a dozen books and leads intensive traveling seminars in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Send e-mail


Alice Frazer Evans, Director of Writing and Research

Alice is the Director of Writing and Research at Plowshares Institute; former Senior Fellow at the Centre for Conflict Resolution, University of Cape Town, South Africa; Senior Trainer for Empowering for Reconciliation and Peace, Indonesia; adjunct faculty at Hartford Seminary in theology and ethics; and an elder in an inner city United Presbyterian Church.  She was the co-director of the Association for Case Teaching for more than twenty years and is the author and/or editor of a number of casebooks on global issues including Christian Ethics: A Case Method Approach; Pastoral Theology from a Global Perspective and Pedagogies for the Non-Poor. More recently she has focused on international curriculum development with special attention to the use of case studies in conflict transformation, documentation and training.   She studied at Agnes Scott College, Edinburgh University, the University of Wisconsin and was recently awarded an honorary doctorate in human rights from Makassar State University, Indonesia.  send e-mail


Phoebe Milliken, Program Manager

Phoebe is responsible for program funding and development, with special leadership for the traveling seminar program.  She brings extensive international experience to Plowshares, having lived, studied and worked in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.  She has taught African history at both the high school and college levels, designed and managed literacy programs in Zimbabwe and Tanzania, and ran a study abroad site in Namibia.  Phoebe holds a masters degree in International Education from George Washington University. send e-mail


Stephen Roberts, Director of Finance

Stephen is responsible for keeping the books and reporting to the proper authoriities. He also does "first level" systems work. He also teaches at the local community college. Prior to joining Plowshares, he was in the investment area of a local insurance company. send e-mail
