Cuba is also afflicted by significant challenges and problems including: a distressed economic system, restricted access to technology, major limitations on freedom of expression, information, and movement, and a one party “democratic system.”  Elections for municipal and national positions take place within the strict control of the communist party. Community gatherings, including workshops, are often monitored by individuals from neighborhood Committees for the Defense of the Revolution (CDR).
