Two Course Opportunities

Equipped to Make a Difference: Developing Young Leaders for the Global Village
Ghost Ranch Seminar, July 11-17, 2005

Plowshares, in partnership with Ghost Ranch, will be offering a participatory and engaging workshop for young leaders to enhance their leadership capacity in church and society from a global perspective.

This workshop will equip young leaders ages 18-22 to transform areas of social concern into social action.  Participants will be encouraged to draw on moral and spiritual resources to identify and mobilize around areas of critical concern in their life and their world.  Special attention will be paid to increasing global interconnectedness and issues of diversity.   The course will involve case studies, interactive role-plays, skill development in conflict resolution, action plan formation, and experiential exposure to local multi-faith leaders working to promote a just peace.  Elizabeth Velez, staff of the Plowshares Institute, and local leaders will serve as educational resources for this event.

Reconciliation for Congregations, Movements, Communities, and Families: A Two Part Course

Ghost Ranch Seminar, July 11-17, 2005

Becoming Agents of Reconciliation in Congregations and Communities

July 11-14, 2005

In the face of growing conflicts within our congregations, our communities, and our nation, this seminar will focus on skills and insights for becoming effective agents of reconciliation.  For the Church to address conflicts in church and society, congregational leaders need to develop the capacity to constructively and creatively facilitate dialogue within their congregations and communities on controversial issues.  This calls for skills of listening, conflict analysis, empathetic identification with others, mutual problem solving, and strategies for facilitation.  The course will use a resource developed by the leaders when working in South Africa.  Peace Skills for Community Mediators uses spiritual, moral, and cultural resources to promote understanding of conflict and to develop constructive approaches to addressing the differences that divide us.  The seminar leaders will draw on extensive international work as mediators and trainers in peace-building skills to address controversial topics.

Tools for Reconciliation in Movements and Families

July 14-17, 2005

While there are many forces in our families and culture in need of reconciliation, this course will focus on bringing reconciliation between two movements often mistrustful of each other: faith and feminism.  Through examination of the lives of early feminists and women of faith including Emily Dickinson, Sojourner Truth, St. Teresa of Avila, Lucretia Mott, and Dorothy Day, we will examine the connection and opportunities for reconciliation between these two powerful but often mischaracterized movements.  This course will use resources developed by its leaders including Imago Therapy, which has a history of bringing unification to couples, families, and movements in conflict as well as the book Faith and Feminism: A Holy Alliance published in 2004.
