In May, Bob Evans and Kadarmanto Hardjowasito (a long-time Plowshares colleague and director of the Center for Conflict Transformation and Reconciliation in Jakarta, Indonesia) working with the Peace Coalition of Northeast India (PCNI), held a mediation workshop that included parties associated with provincial disputes.
Three principal tribal leaders who were connected to prior Plowshares conflict transformation training are committed to further the process of mediation toward a more equitable distribution of development resources and representation in provincial governance. Their initial goal is to restore previously harmonious relationships among currently conflicting tribal groups in Manipur. Mutual agreements could end the cycle of blockades, which included more than 120 days of a violent blockade of the province this last year. Such blockades can lead to corruption and often hurt most the poorest people by prohibiting the legal import and export of food, medicine and fuel.
Plowshares and the Peace Coalition of Northeast India, formed following a Plowshares training in 2010, are committed to support these tribal leaders in their dialogue process as well as other community leaders who were part of the intensive 2012 training.
